It really feels as though we're well and truly into autumn now. The dark nights are drawing in, and the weather as about as unpredictable as a drunken lama. Not that I've ever actually seen a drunken lama... they may be very predictable, who knows!
I decided to start A on Classical Civilisation lessons twice a week. We decided together to go with Thursdays and Fridays, as Thursdays he only has one InterHigh lesson, and Fridays he only has two lessons plus Tutorial. There's a big gap on Fridays now where Creative Pursuits used to be, so it's the perfect opportunity to fit in a bit of Ancient Greek / Roman.
Two lessons down so far and he says he's enjoying it. He's finding it interesting. That's a great start in my opinion. Otherwise his InterHigh is going okay, although I personally think he could do with putting a little more effort into his homework. We're working on that.
L decided to take refuge in her room to get her studying done. I understand where she's coming from, as the boys really do get quite noisy downstairs, but at the same time she has been known in the past to be very skilled at procrastinating. She seems to have a better work ethic at the moment although the boys claim they've seen her at times watching gacha (anime type things I think, don't ask me it's all a bit mumbo jumbo to the ancient mother here) videos, so I'll have to keep an eye on her. I don't want her to lose her focus. She says it was during her break though...
She's really pleased she switched from Physics to Astronomy though; she's enjoying it much more, and as a result more information is sinking in. I'm glad it seems as though it was the right move. I've informed the exam centre and they've sent me a new invoice.
As for J and N, this week went well. They started using the Twinkl. Go app one day, which they enjoyed.
Of course Twinkl worksheets are also great. We've covered English, Maths, ancient Egypt, R.E. (writing their own ten commandments), and story writing this week. Geography was all about the mountain ranges of Europe. J wrote that he now wants to visit the Pyrenees mountains, and I think I impressed him just a little when I told him that not only have I visited the Pyrenees, I've also been to Andorra. He didn't know Andorra existed.
Science involved bottle flipping. Yeah bottle flipping doesn't exactly sound educational, but trust me, the science was sound. It was all about investigating how different volumes of water in the bottles would make it easier or harder to flip, and then writing about whether or not their predictions were accurate, and plotting results on graphs.
We had a nice afternoon in the woods on Wednesday, with something of an impromptu P.E. lesson which included climbing trees and balancing on logs. They also found young conkers, and planted acorns.
N and I have been doing a little French each evening whilst I put him to bed. We've been counting to 10 and singing "head, shoulders, knees and toes" - it's nothing major but it's a start.
One more week and A breaks up from InterHigh, although L and the other two are continuing their study for two weeks before breaking up for half term.
Roll on week six.
