Day Three

InterHigh seems to have definitely been working on their connectivity issues, because today A has no problem getting onto his lessons. I spoke to a man from their accounting department on the phone today, and he said their technicians have been working flat out to sort out the teething problems at the beginning of the week.

A had English, and then two Science lessons with a break in-between. He's not loving Science because it's all about how leaves work, which he says is rather boring. Still, it's no different to what he'd be learning about in school. I remember learning about leaves when I was in school. I don't blame him, I always found that sort of thing boring too, but it gets tolerated, as you do. He can't wait for his next History class.

Meanwhile L discovered that Absorb Online Learning was down for maintenance, so instead we worked on Classical Civilisation together earlier than usual. This time we covered the Roman versions of the gods and goddesses, and discussed some elements concerning the formation of Rome, and touched on the names of some of the temples on two of its seven hills.

J settled down on the sofa to read. He's flying ahead with his book and is already on Chapter 25. Meanwhile N is still circa Chapter 6, but that's to be expected, he's only 7. He concentrates well though for his dad when he's reading, and tries well to sound his words out.

It was during A's break between his Science lessons that I'd just finished L's Class Civ lesson, so as it was a beautiful day, we decided to take a drive to the local woods to go for a Nature Studies session. It was nice to get out of the house (with the exception of a little bit of sibling squabbling.)

We looked at moss growing on the trees, and discussed how it tends to grow on the North side, and we searched for different types of leaves.

If you don't count the fact that N fell over in the mud, and later on A twisted his ankle, it was lovely. The walk was very pleasant, and we found acorns and oak leaves, beech leaves, blackberries, ferns, and other woodland delights such as spotting a nest up in a tree.

Once home, A went upstairs for his final lesson of the day, meanwhile N and J set to work making rubbings of their leaves, and writing about their "adventure" in the woods.

N then did some work on Skoolbo, covering all of the daily challenges so that he could unlock his new character, and then sat down to do some spellings in his workbook, practicing the differences between similar sounds which are written differently.

J worked on some Maths, which he found a little challenging. It was working out profits and losses, and using multiplication. I don't think he's very fond of Maths. I get the impression it's more that he doesn't like it rather than him not being able to do it, because when he puts his mind to it (and with a little explanation), he can do it, but it's definitely not a favourite subject.

L finally managed to get onto her online courses, but by that time it was already 5pm so she just did an hour of Physics and then called it a day. She was finding velocity and acceleration a bit complicated, but her dad helped her to work things out. She knows to message her Physics tutor if she gets stuck in future. She will have to catch up with her other three subjects at the weekend that she was unable to do today.

Tomorrow A has only one lesson at InterHigh, so I think it's a great opportunity for him to use that extra time to get his homework completed. That means it won't be eating into his weekend.

Thus concludes our third day of homeschooling with four.

The government has announced that from Monday onwards, social meetings of more than six people in total are banned, even between two households or with family members. This makes it a bit problematic for us, as there's six of us in this household already... so how are we supposed to meet up with friends or family members? *sigh*
